PAPOVIC' and POPOVIC' 2 different surname in 'old country'.
Up to 1918 it was http://users.erols.com/white28/austhung.htm where 12 different languages were spoken. Would help you to know religion and language of your ancestor.
Did he actually stay in America and is buried here as well? If yes, do you have his death certificate?
