The potato famine was a relatively late event in terms of emigration of Scots to the US.There were waves of Scots to the US due to the clearing of the highlands after the Jacobite uprising was quenched. This was about 1730-1740 I believe. The potato famine happened about a hundred years later, in Ireland. Many Scots had gone to Ireland and many were almost forcible re-patrioted to Ireland. It is doubtful that the Earl of Monteith would have tried to escape the potato famine, Earl's tended to have money and the famine hit the poor.
What is likely however is that the Earl would have tried to escape due to the Jacobite uprising.
