I will need a refresher on this family as it is several years since I was doing my research.
The first thing to come to grips with research on this family is the variety of their individual names and spelling. Albino, Anthony, John, Joseph are some of the names used by Ellenís father. From memory I used about 32 various spellings of Montecino to arrive at over a dozen different family records of different spellings and names.
Even Ellen changed her name to Nelly in her school years.
Ellen, was born 20/04/1879, married John Young, son of John and Isobel on 16 Jan 1908.
Tracy you mention you have Ellen & Johnís marriage certificate, I do not recall what was on the certificate but her marriage recorded surname is spelt Montifino. I note you have spelt her marriage certificate name as Montecino. Is this a typo?
Mary died in Napier, even her burial record has two different spellings. Her name spelt Montezena and his name as John Montozena.
These varieties of names and spelling makes the families very difficult to research as each variation has to be done individually.
I assume they were probably illiterate as they both signed documents with an ďXĒ and as such probably due to the problem of not understanding written English relied on other persons writing their surname as it was seemingly pronounced. However this does not account for their variety of first names.
