Ooopsss, didn't mean to ask about Mary Montague, but rather Thomas Montague as "possibly" being a son of William and Lettice Weekes Lidford Montague. I'll try to answer your questions in order. A)Thomas Montague Sr., died 9 Feb and was buried 14 Feb 1720. (Christ Church Parish Register). Now, according to "Adventurers of Purse and Person", page 455: "Thomas3 Montague (William2, Peter1)(Peter1 being the Peter Montague that arrived in James City in 1621)married (1) Katherine ______, and (2) Katherine (Williamson) Young, widow of William Young. On 10 June 1706 his father made a deed of gift of land to him and his wife Katherine (Essex Co. Deeds & Wills 12, p. 227). He died 9 Feb 1720/1 (Christ Church Parish Register) and left will, 7 Feb 1720/1-16 May 1721 (Essex Co. Will Book 3, pp. 255-56), which named his wife, son-in-law (stepson) William Young and daughter-in-law (stepdaughter) Elizabeth Young, bequeathed "all that parcel of land called Montague's Island" to "cozen (nephew) William Montague, son of my brother William Montague," and left to "Thomas Paine of Middlesex County, 150 acres out of the upper side of my land lying in Essex County." This is all the information I have concerning this Thomas Montague. Thomas M. would have been the cousin of Mary Montague (wife of Thomas Payne). Why he chose to mention that William Montague was the son of his brother William, and did not mention the relationship of Thomas Paine is unknown. I "assume" it had to do with the number of William Montague's around Essex & Middlesex Counties during that time period. Also, Thomas Montague being called Sr. in the register I believe has to do with the fact that there were more than one Thomas Montague's at this time. Colonial records used Sr. to show "eldest", rather than as a sign of father - son. As per his will, Thomas Montague had no children. B)Here are the "known" children of William & Lettice Weekes Lydford Montague: 1) Abraham Montague, son of William and Lettice, bapt. 28 Sep 1701. (Christ Church Parish Records). Just a quick note, but I believe that William & Lettice were married before the birth of their son Abraham. The Christ Church Parish Register is not bashful about naming a child "illegitimate". 2) Mary Montague, daughter of William and Lette (sic), was bapt. 23 Feb 1703/4. (Christ Church Parish Register). 3) William Montague married, 3 Dec 1729, Jane Price (Christ Church Parish Register). I was only "suggesting" that William & Lettice "may" have had a son Thomas, but am now pretty well convinced that they did not. Robert, I'll be sending you an email later today with all the facts, documentation, etc. that I have located concerning the life of Mary Montague. There appears to be a huge amount of evidence (both primary & circumstantial) that Mary Montague, daughter of Peter & Mary and wife of Thomas Payne was not the person who married Capt. Joseph Ball (ca 1707).
