The Thomas Montague referred to on p. 455 (s/o William, s/o Peter) is almost certainly not Thomas Montague Sr. (1694-1756). From my records he is s/o William Montague III (1670-1713), s/o Peter Montague II (1642-1701/2). In addition to William III, Peter II had 4 other children: Katherine, Mary (b. abt. 1664), Peter III (b. 1666), and John (b. 1682). So if Mary married Thomas Payne producing one child named Thomas (your ancestor), then he and Thomas Montague are first cousins. I have no life dates for either Thomas Montague or Thomas Payne, but given your reference that Thomas Montague died on Feb 1720/21, that would mean he probably died a young man between 25-30 years.
Side note: I have William III married to Lettice Weeks (Lidford) on Jan 3, 1702/3 whom I believe to be his second wife and therefore not the mother of Thomas Montague. William III was almost certainly married earlier around 1690-95, but I have no leads at this time. Also I wonder if this Lidford and your Catherine Lydford are related.
