Maybe Mary Montague (b. 1664) is Mary Payne but she could also be Mary Johnson (d. 1721), which I maintain. Mary Johnson’s third husband was Joseph Ball (m. 1707). They had one child Mary Ball (1708-1888) who is indisputably the mother of George Washington. What is disputed is whether Mary Johnson’s maiden name was Montague. First husband was Mr. Johnson (two children, Elizabeth and John). Husband #2 Thomas Payne in 1682. Husband #4 Richard Hewes (d. 1713). Mary Johnson outlived all her husbands and died in 1721 the same year as her first son John.

Douglas Southall Freeman’s 5-volume biography “George Washington” offers this on p. 532, Note 23. “It has been . . . maintained that she was Mary Montague before her marriage and that from her George Washington received the Montague seal he used.” [I have an original letter, with seal, in my possession].
