James J and Catherine Montague - Botetourt/Alleghany Co. VA

  of 1526

I am looking for information on James M Montegue and Catherine Montague that lived on the Jackson River in now Alleghany County, VA.
What little I know is stated below. Any additional information is appreciated.
I am working on a History of the Oakland Presbyterian Church that is located in the Selma area of Alleghany County. James was one of the orginal trustees to the church in 1834. The Church was used during the Civil War as a hospital. I would like to include a brief history of the Montegues in the booklet.

The Montague name is no longer in Alleghany County and little is known of the James M Montague that was the original trustee of the Oakland Church. James M Montague is listed in the 1850 Census of Alleghany County, age 43, a farmer, Catherine his wife age 35, Martha age 9, James age 7, Elizabeth age 6 and Lucy age 7 months. In the 1860 Census of Alleghany County, VA, James is age 50 and a farmer. His land value was $8,000 and the personal property value was $21,000. Living in his household were Martha J age 19, James R age 17, Elizabeth J age 16, Lucy E age 10, William F Evans age 29, wagoner; and Alexander H Shepherd age 45, Civil Engineer. It is assumed that his wife Catherine died between 1850 and 1860 because she is not shown in the 1860 Census for Alleghany County. James M also is shown in the 1870 Census of Alleghany County, VA.

On October 1, 1849, James M Montague acquired 32 acres on the northwest side of the Jackson River in Alleghany County adjoining is own land. In October of 1856, Montague acquires 315 acres on the north side of the Jackson River and the south side of Fore or Brown’s Mountain, adjoining his own land, Douglas B Layne, Jordan’s and Campbell Karnes. James is listed as a Magistrate for the Covington area in Chataigne’s Directory of Alleghany County, Va 1888-1889.
