One of my German* ancestors, Peter MONS, left Prussia* for North America sometime in the late 18th century or early 19th century. He was recorded as having worked as a tailor in "Seckenshave", a settlement said to be "near Canada in North America". I have tried to discover the location of Seckenshave (German for "damp-soil farm"?), but to not avail.
* Unfortunately, the above is all I know about Peter MONS. Although he had ties with Prussia (his son, who was also named Peter MONS, grew up in Prussia, etc.), I am not 100% convinced that he was of German origin or that he left Prussia for North America (he could have left via another country). The name "Peter MONS" does not strike me as being very German.
If any of the above sounds familiar or if someone could shed some light on the MONS surname and/or the whereabouts of Seckenshave, that would be much appreciated indeed!
