Alison,
Not sure of location of some of the place names you mentioned re: Richard Monkman. This is what I have, but I must tell you it is pieced together from family memories, the IGI, parish register and census microfilm, and MI's. We don't have documents in hand yet, but a trip to Yorkshire in March will hopefully change that!A paternalgggrandfather, Christopher Dawson (c. Sherburn 1803)m. Sarah Monkman (c.Sherburn 1802) on 25 Nov. 1826 at Sherburn. Sarah buried Sherburn 1868. I believe her parents were a Richard and Hannah Monkman both buried Sherburn (Richard in 1837 age 68 and Hannah in 1835 age 67). I think they had at least 7 children besides Sarah, and a Richard was the oldest c. 1787. I also suspect that Hannah Monkman's parents were Richard and Hannah Wilson m. 21 Sept. 1783.He was from Foston on the Wolds.
Haven't pursued this line further because I've been concentrating on one of Christopher's and Sarah's children.
Have only been on the Internet since late Aug. and only peripherally into genealogy prior to then.My sister in Pennsylvania has been doing some of it on and off for 15 years or so. I am a novice, to be sure! I have learned a great deal about researching technigues from reading messages on Yorksgen, for example, but have not been in the position to help someone more knowledgeable than I!It sure would be exciting to me if any of this info turns out to be useful for you.
Sincerely,
Linda
