John Monday (b.1775) and Betsy Young (b.1784), of Knox Co., TN
JOHN MONDAY (b. 16 Aug 1775 in VA) son of William Monday (d. 15 Nov 1817 in Knox Co., TN) and his wife, Lettice (Foster) Monday (d. 1 Sep 1842) accompanied his family to present-day Knox Co., TN where he married BETSY YOUNG, 19 Jun 1800.Betsy Young (b. 17 Jun 1784 in Caroline Co., VA) was the daughter ofJohn Young and his wife, Jane (Tompkins) Young (1764-1834).
The six children of John Monday and his wife, Betsy (Young) Monday, were:
1. Owen B. Monday (b.1801 in Knox Co., TN; d. ante 1827); never married.Owen Monday purchased four slaves and 195 acres from his father in 1823.Owen Monday appears to have died prior to 1827 when Owen’s father and brother, James W. Monday, had apparently taken possession of the 195 acres and the slaves.It appears Owen died unmarried and the property appears to have reverted to the nearest heirs, in this case his father and eldest brother.John and James W. Monday sold a slave, Minerva, to James King on 17 Nov 1827.This was one of the four slaves John Monday sold to Owen Monday in 1823.John Monday sold the 195 acres to James Adair.
2. James Wallace Monday (b. 4 Feb 1804 in Knox Co., TN; d. 21 Jan 1858 in Knox Co., TN); married 7 Feb 1828, Knox Co., TN to Amelia Sharp.James Wallace Monday is buried at the Huckleberry Methodist Church Cemetery.A contemporary journal records James Wallace Monday’s death as occurring on 21 Jan 1858.The children of James Wallace Monday were:
2a. Eliza Ann Monday (b.ca 1829); m. 16 Jun 1853, Knox Co., TN to Elbert Cannon.
2b. James E. Monday/Mundy (b. 17 Nov 1830; d. 18 Apr 1901); m. 14 Nov 1855, Knox Co., TN to Rebecca H. Luttrell (b. 12 Mar 1835; d. 19 Apr 1920), daughter of Lewis and Martha (Gibbs) Luttrell.They are buried at Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery in Knox Co., TN.This branch of the family assumed the spelling “Mundy.”
2c. Owen B. Monday (b.ca 1833); m. 25 Nov 1869, Knox Co., TN to Esther Stewart.This was apparently a second marriage as the 1870 Census reflects the presence of his two children, William (10 yrs old) and Sidney J. (4 yrs old).The 1860 Census (Knox Co., TN) lists Owen with a female, Mariah, who appears to be his first wife.Owen Monday is found residing in Knoxville, TN in 1880 (Nelson Street).
2d. Alfred S. Monday (b.ca 1834/9);He served in the Confederate Army as a private in Co. E, 12th TN Cavalry Battalion, enlisting on 20 Apr 1863.He is found living with his mother in the 1870 Census.He was residing in Knox County in 1891.
2e. Sarah E. Monday (b.ca 1838; alive 1850); She died before her father (1858).She was found in her father’s residence in 1850.
2f. David Wallace Monday (b.ca 1842);Resided with his mother in 1870 (Knox Co., TN).He is said to have married Sarah Woodrow and his part of Chilhowee Park is said to have been his farm.He is said to be buried at McMillan Station.
2g. William Monroe Monday/Mundy (b. 16 May 1846 in Knox Co., TN ; d. 12 Aug 1903 in Blount Co., TN); m. 26 Dec 1877, Blount Co., TN to Martha McReynolds (b. 16 Dec 1857; d. 13 Feb 1945), daughter of Guilford and Permelia (Gamble) McReynolds.He was a physician and took the “Mundy” spelling of his surname.He is buried at the Middle Settlement Methodist Church Cemetery in Blount Co., TN.His widow is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery in Maryville, TN.
3. Harriet Monday (b.ca 1808 in Knox Co., TN); m. 27 Dec 1827, Knox Co., TN to Robert H. LUTTRELL, son ofJames Churchwell Luttrell and his wife, Elizabeth (Witt) Luttrell.The children of Robert and Harriet (Monday) Luttrell were:

4.Brice Young Monday (b. 8 May 1815 in Knox Co., TN); m. 1843, Knox Co., TN to Sarah Minerva Murphy (1818-1900), daughter of Alexander Murphy and his first wife, Delilah (Gilliam) Murphy.Brice Monday is found in 1845 Knox County tax records.He died prior to the enumeration of the 1850 Census.His widow, Sarah, is found living with her brother-in-law, Calvin Harris (who married Martha Mariah Murph) in Bradley Co., TN in the 1850 Census.Sarah (Murphy) Monday returned to Knox Co., TN and was married to William A. Johnson in 1853.The family moved to Meigs Co., TN following the Civil War and Sarah Minerva (Murphy) Monday Johnson is buried at Rocky Springs Methodist Church Cemetery in the Ten Mile Community of Meigs County.Brice Y. and Sarah (Murphy) Monday had an only child:
4a. Martha Minerva Young Monday (b. 18 May 1844 in Knox Co., TN; d. 3 Nov 1912 in Meigs Co., TN); m. 16 Jun 1880, Meigs Co., TN to Adam Nelson.
She is buried at the Rocky Springs Methodist Church Cemetery in Meigs Co., TN.
5. Pleasant Monday (b.ca 1817; alive 1870);He and his wife, Elizabeth, are found in Knox Co., TN in the 1870 Census residing near Amelia Monday, widow of Pleasant’s brother, James W. Monday.The children of Pleasant Monday are:
