Hello everyone,
I have been researching my Molan name hot and heavy for 3 years...and some for 7 years before that. I have found out some info on MY line of Molans, maybe it will interest some of you......and maybe we are connected. It is interesting to me that so many of the Molans posted here are from Ireland. Mine came over from Norway and there was a name change. Here is the story thus far. I have had to hire a researcher from Illinois and am now working with her and a man who wrote a book on MY Molans.....see if this fits for any of you. My great grandfather came to this country from Norway in the mid 1800's (best I have so far, date wise)..he went to Illinois. His name was SOREN THORSON BUT after being in America he changed his name to Molan ....the gentleman who wrote the book just told me via telephone the other night that he changed his name to Molan (first Moland and then some dropped the d) because it was his mothers maiden name!!!In Norway her name was Maeland...over here pronounced, Molan.
I have searched for years on this family under the name Molan but when I started researching Thorson, Thoreson, I found my family!!!The gentleman who wrote the book also just told me the other night that the Molans from Illinois may not realize it but most of them started out as Thorsons.
I have pictures of 12 Molan graves in Illinois , all in the same cemetery.......what threw me off and I'm sharing this with you all incase it has thrown you off is my family said my great grandfather came to America from Norway and changed his name like immediately!!!This is INCORRECT!!!Censuses prove that not only did my great grandfather go by Thorson for some years, so did my I was looking under the wrong last name!!!!If you have names like Molan, Moland, Uhr, Thorson, Knudson/Knutson in your line, you may very well be part of this line. Hope this helps someone. If I can be of further help or if someone has something they'd like to share , feel free to email me at
Thanks and have a great day!!! Meridee "Jodi" Molan
