Hello Beryl,

I am also descended from a MOGFORD from Somerset who moved to Newport, Monmouthshire, and I have come across your family so often I feel as if we are related! However, I have not been able to make a link between the two branches. William MOGFORD was born in the 1790s, the son of Thomas MOGFORD and Ann HILL and christened in 1799 in Minehead, Somerset. He became a chainmaker, and moved to Bristol, where he married Elizabeth SINNOTT in 1823. Some time in the early 1830s they moved to Pillgwenlly, Newport, right by the docks. Their children were Elizabeth, William Henry, Jane, Sarah, Richard and Mary Ann, all but Elizabeth born in Newport.

I presume you know that your John (the older one) was probably born in Wellington.

Richard MOGFORD's butcher's shop in Commercial Street, Newport, was a few doors down from the basket shop of my great-grandfather, William GARLAND.

Best wishes,
