Left out a few things. My gg grandmother was Mary Jane ? Mode who was born ca 1848, probably in Western N.C. She either married or had my great grandfather, John Thomas Mode, out of wedlock. He was born Sept. of 1867 around McDowell Co. N.C. Mary Jane either gave her son her maiden name or his father's name. No bastardy bonds or marriage records have been found to help identify J.T. Mode's father. Have not found parentage of Mary Jane. She is found in 1880 married ? to Augustus C. Dover along with several children and her son J.T. Mode. His name is not listed as MODE, however. They are living in McDowell Co. at this time. Augustus and his parents are in McDowell Co. in 1870 as well. Mary Jane is said to have been Cherokee. Gus and Jane move to Cocke Co. TN ca 1886. She died in 1906 in Newport, TN. John T. Mode married Nancy Belle Green and they had several children: Joseph Wheeler, Robert Lee, Andrew, Pearl, Hatie Louise. I would like to find folks kin to these folks. Would also love to hear from those with the MODE name and their theory on where this name originated from. I have traced all sides of my family but have'nt a clue about my own surname. HELP!
