I am looking for information on my GGGgrandmother, Mary “Polly” McGhee. When did she die? Where is she buried? Her maiden name was Mary Harris. She was born in 1788 probably in TN. She married Zera McGhee in 1804 in Grainger Co. TN. She and her family moved to Hamilton Co. TN and Murray Co. GA after Zera’s death in 1836. She moved to Wayne Co MO with several of her children and grandchildren between 1850 and 1860 and is listed in the 1860 census as 72 years old. The children that probably moved to MO with her were Wiley B. (my Gggrandfather), Calvin, John F., James, Sarah Mayes, Louisa Evans, Samuel Crawford and Zera Marion II. They lived between Greenville and Piedmont. It appears that Calvin and John F. came before the rest of the family. I would appreciate any information you may have on any of them.
My GGgrandfather, Wiley, was married to a Melissa Stokley in TN. They had six children together between 1841 and 1851. Martha, Mordilla, Elizabeth, Amanda, William T. and Samuel. All but Samuel was born in Hamilton Co. TN. Samuel is listed as being born in Ark. in 1851. I am trying to figure out what happened to Wiley’s first wife Melissa.
It appears that Wiley married the widow Margret Marberry in 1859 or 1860. She had several children of her own but for some reason didn’t stay with Wiley for long as Wiley married another widow in 1865 or 1866. He married the widow Melissa Haniple. In 1867 my Ggrandfather John F. McGhee was born in Greenville. John had a brother Zeed and a brother Charley. His sister’s were Alice (Craddock?) and Liddie (Stokley). Wiley died in 1879 and is buried in Duncan Cemetery. Melissa then married Tom Rubottom and is buried between Wiley and Tom in Duncan Cemetery. John married Luella Chiles and their oldest child was Thomas Lee McGhee, my grandfather. Siblings were James Arthur “Ott”, Minnie, Myrtle, and youngest son was Claude McGhee. Thomas married Ida Mae Wood. Their children were June Kean, Mae Masterson/Sullivan, Willard and Fred McGhee. Their youngest child was Floyd McGhee, my father.
I am writing a book on the McGhee's from TN to MO. I have been researching this for years, but could sure use some help if you have information. If I can help any of you, don’t hesitate to contact me.
