St. Francis Orphans' Home was established in Nevada by the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in about 1893. I believe it first started as a school, and the Sisters were soon asked to take in and care for orphaned children. The children were schooled at the orphanage and, I would presume, each had daily chores that they had to perform for the operation of the orphanage, such as gardening, etc., for food.

The "Unknown" on the Federal Census would be for birth location of the father, and the orphanage probably did not have that information to give to the census taker.
