Some resources which may help you are available online. Go to the local genealogy's website at www.rootsweb.com/~motcogs/ Click on the "Resources" tab. From the list of buttons, lick on Deaths. There you will find a link to the death index online and also a link to the Vernon Co Probate File Index (also covers guardianship). Be sure to use alternate or partial spellings when searching these indexes. And also check the Genealogy Room Resources page to see if your family is listed in any of the online newspaper book indexes.

I'm trying to piece together details from your 2 messages to look at census records. Is it correct that May/Maude (Hunter) Whitaker died in the 1890's, leaving a daughter who was raised by a family named Hunter or Rogers? Or is Maude Whitaker her maiden name? Do you have any dates or marriage information which might help identify your Maud (Hunter) Whitaker? DeWitt Clinton Hunter had a daughter named Katie May Hunter, born about 1869.
