The Rolla New Era (Rolla, MO) September 18, 1886 Page 2
Near Summerville, Texas County, a terrible tragedy resulted from a quarrel between Jerre Orchard and Riley Martin over a game of base ball. At the time of the quarrel friends interfered and it was thought the trouble was over, but several nights later at a "corn cutting" dance the old dispute which took place at the ball ground between Orchard and Martin was revived betwen Riley Martin and Zem McCaskell. Several parties took a hand with revolvers and in the affray Riley Martin received three shots, Orchard was very badly wounded, Zem McCaskell received a shot in the breast and Lewis Raider, a druggist who was trying to stop the trouble, was also badly shot. James Stogdale, who did the shootins, fled. He was intoxicated at the time. All the participants belong to excellent families. They were all raised in Summerville and vicinity, and had been playmates and friends all their lives.
