I did not find the burial information for Charles Samuel, but based upon information found at the Stone County Genweb site his mother, Malinda, is buried as Malinda DeForest, Galena Cemetery, 1842-1934. In the 1920 Stone County census she is Malinda DeForest, mother-in-law, living in the home of her daughter, Maggie D., who married Charles Barnes.

Malinda's son, Stonewall, is shown as Watson in 1910, but as DeForest in 1920.

This is not my line, but I find this very interesting. Based upon your research, this was not an uncommon practice.
