I'm planning a visit to Stoddard County in late June. My Stewart family is having a reunion in St Louis the 25-27th. Unknown to me until February-when the plans were first circulated, my 88 yr old uncle, Frank Stewart, planned the reunion 4-5 years ago after learning that I found the graves for Washington Marion Stewart, his great grandfather and Samuel T Stewart, his gr-gr-grandfather in Moore Cemetery.
We had searched for the Stewarts in several cemeteries 30-35 years ago in Bloomfield and finally found them online in a Rootsweb Stoddard link. Now my uncle wants to see the cemetery. I hope to be able to still get the gate key (the first gate anyway) from the Sheriff's office and can still drive in past the radio tower.
However, my uncle has recently suffered a couple of head injuries due to falls and I don't want to risk him taking another spill on that root covered trail. The last part of the walk will be very difficult. And the last gate is locked and I KNOW he wouldn't be able to climb over or scoot under the cenetery gate. I thought that I would use a wheel chair to make sure he doesn't fall-but that still doesn't get us threw the gate.
When I was there last (about 2004 or 2005) there was evidence that someone was able to get a tractor into the cemetery to cut the grass and it is likely they didn't enter through the rusted LOCKED cemetery gate. So there must be another way in. Is anyone aware who might be cutting the grass for the owners-I don't think they live in Stoddard? And most importantly can you connect me with that person so I can ask permission to enter the cemetery the way they do. I would really appreciate any help you can send my way.
