Briggs adoption and Zugg connection?

I have a letter that was written to my grandmother by one of her cousins about my ggf (Bert Briggs) adoption. She states that he had been left as a baby on Bob Briggs porch in a basket and $1,000.00 cash. The person writing the letter mentions that she knew who his father was and who his mother was if my grandmother would care to know. She stated that she knew her well and that she was a well respected lady.

My ggf:
Bert Austin Briggs
b. Sept 13, 1887
m. Sept 14, 1907 to Adah Daniels
d. June 28, 1968

As I understand it, my ggf, Bert Briggs was a baby (as mentioned above) when he was left on the porch of R.W. (Bob) and Lydia (nee Masters?) Briggs porch. He was not adopted by them until he was much older, maybe 12 or 13. I have a copy of the adoption papers somewhere. He started grade school in Lancaster, MO in 1893 and attended the Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri in 1905.

R.W. Briggs may have had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Of those, Tom, Bill and Hattie may have been their names.

The only info that I have about the Zugg line is that my ggf may have had an Uncle named E.B. Zugg. I dont' know if he was a natural relative or if he became a relative through the adoption.

If anyone can provide any clues to my family line, I would be so appreciative. At this point my history really only begins with my grandparents. Not only was there the adoption on my mom's side of the family, my dad didn't know who his real father was either. Ahhh, the joys of shaking the family tree!
