Nancy,
I don't know about your Vaughans, but will certainly look out for them. Malinda Powell was the sister of my great-great-grandfather John William Powell. Their father was Henry Powell (1802, KY) and their mother was Matilda Hilton (ca. 1805, KY). You might have noticed if you've done much research in Schuyler County that almost all Powell families have a Matilda. Matilda's brother Jonathan Hilton was also in Schuyler County, as were James and Charles Powell and families. John Hilton's son Henry was written about in the "History of Schuyler County, MO" regarding a "Partisan Ranger" raid on the courthouse.
Henry Powell, John W. Powell, Benjamin Melvin (Henry Powell's step-son), and Henry Hilton all joined Porter's 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry in the summer of 1862. Henry Hilton was captured and died in Gratiot Prison on January 1, 1863, but the other three "went south" to serve in the Confederate Army. Henry Powell was the only one who returned from the Civil War, and by 1870 had moved the Powell families to the Butler, Bates County, MO area.
Do you know which Powell families went to Iowa in 1861? I've been told that some did, but don't know which ones.
Would be glad to trade info anytime.
Ray Walters; Independence, MO
