I assure you that the record is correct. It resides in the Philadelphia Archives. It is dated in 1733. It is labeled under the name of Mathias Smiser(sic.) but inside it states that it is the Porbate of the Estate of Martin Schmeisser. It identifies his wife as Maria Barbara and that she had remarried. It further states that Martin died the fifteenth day of September, 1731 on the sea. I can supply you with copies of the document if you like.
It is not uncommon at all for surname spellings to be changed. It is wittnessed on the document in question. However, the majority of Smyser's in this country spell it with the "y". In fact your Michael Smyser's brother George from whom I am descended used the Smiser spelling as does my family. At the same time his son Samuel Merritt Smyser changed back to the "y" spelling. Most of the German surnames are spelled many ways in this country. It doesn't make them any the less related.
