regarding the "colony" cemetery in marshall, mo. I believe the cemetery most used for the residents is visible off 240 highway at rt. "O". The cemetery is up the hill east of the state school lake. it is accessible from the lakeside parking lot. several years ago, concerned citizens erected a white picket fence around it. it is now well maintained. west of there, on the curve of lincoln street you will see another cemetery on the east side. it has a wrought iron fence around it. this is actually an old "town" cemetery. I don't know if any "colony" residents are buried there.

A little history as I know it. At the turn of the 20th century, the place was known as the Colony for the Feeble Minded, or some such wording. It later became the Marshall State School and Hospital for the Mentally Retarded. Now, it is known as the Marshall Habilitation Center.

The place was a "dumping ground" for youth during the depression. If the State could not figure out what to do with them, they were sent to the institution. Many normal children were placed there. Orphans, unruly kids, borderline retards, etc. The normal kids growing up with the lower functioning people was not a good thing. It was not a good place. It was the States answer to a problem they did not want to face. Does this sound familiar?
