Jeremiah O'Dell, 1798-1884, donated 65 acres for the county seat of Saline County. When the citizens of Marshall celebrated their centennial they hired a genealogist in Tennessee who concluded he was the son of Abraham and Mary O'Dell of Washington County, Tennessee. I believe this is in error. There were 3 Jeremiah O'Dells in central Missouri before 1830. I believe Abraham and Mary were the parents of the Jeremiah O'Dell who was shot to death in Georgetown, in Pettis county, in 1840. I will give a brief summary of my reasons.
1. Jeremiah of Marshall wrote in his own hand that he was born in Cocke County, Tennessee. He never mentioned Washington County.
2.The genealogist said the the son of Abraham and Mary came to Missouri in 1828. Jeremiah of Marshall said he came first in 1815, returned to Tennessee to marry and then returned to Missouri in 1817. All of his children, beginning with Calvin in 1819, were born in Missouri.
3.The genealogist has nothing about any of the other children of Abraham and Mary coming to Missouri. She was apparently unaware of the following people. Jehu O'Dell (not John as shown in some books)and his children lived in the same household with Jeremiah from at least 1850 until Jehu died in 1859. Miss Elizabeth O'Dell died in 1897 and the Marshall paper said she was a sister of Jeremiah and the last of that generation. The families of Thizziah O'Dell Reagan of Pettis County and Deborah Douglass both said these women were sister of Jeremiah of Marshall. After the death of Deborah's husband in Jackson County, Missouri she moved near Jeremiah in Saline County. None of these four are among the known children of Abraham and Mary.
