John W Chadduck (1847-1927)

I would like to request assistance from anyone that can assist in helping me positively link my 2nd great grandfather to his father. While assumptions can be made there are many discrepancies that must be resolved.

My 2ndGGF is John W. Chadduck
Intended (and suspected) father Lorenzo Dow Chadduck

Here is what I know.

John W first appears on the US Census in 1850 as the child of Lorenzo at age of 3 in Elizabethtown, Marshall Co., Virginia.

In the 1856 State Census of Iowa, Jefferson County, Polk Township with Lorenzo at age 9.

Again in the 1860 with Lorenzo as John age 12 in Abingdon, Locust Grove Township, Jefferson County, Iowa.

John married Mary Ann Andrews on 29 Jul 1869 in Montgomery County Missouri. Mary was b Abt 1848 d 25 Nov 1876. She was the daughter of Samuel L Andrews and Lavina Jane Seale. Mary Ann is buried in the Andrews family cemtery outside Montgomery City, MO. Her tombstone reads "Mary A. wife of John W. Shaduck, died November 25, 1876 aged 28 years. I will not forget thee, The past and the future are blended together, by loves dearest?"

I can not locate John on the 1870 US Census HOWEVER he does appear on the 1876 Missouri State Census, Montgomery County, Township 49 pg 291. On that census there are 4 Chadducks
T L Chadduck age 6 (Likely son Thomas Lovelace b 17 Apr 1870)
J W Chadduck age 29
W Chadduck age 1 (Likely son William b Jun 1874)
L(?) L Chadduck age 5 (Likely Daughter Elizabeth b abt 1872)

John remarried on 31 Oct 1894 in Montgomery County to Paradine Keeth b Feb 1853 d 02 Aug 1929

He appears on the 1900 in Prairie Township, Montgomery County Missouri with Paradine. Interestingly the birth shown is Nov 1849.

There is also John W Chadduck that appears in 1900 US Census in Eldridge Township (school) Stutsman North Dakota age 52 b 1847 born in VA saying his father Born in VA

He appears on the 1910 in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County Missouri with Paradine.

In 1920 a J W Chadduck appears as a "Boarder" in the City of St Louis, with a Marital status of Widowed. Paradine didn't die until 1929 and I have no record of divorce. (This is likely NOT John W Chadduck)

When John died in Maplewood MO on 08 Jun 1927 the information for his death certificate was provided by his son Thomas Lovelace Chadduck (my GGF) and this is where it gets confusing...

Thomas indicated no mother or father. That John's birthdate was 16 Dec 1853 and that he was born in Ohio. He also indicated that John's wife was Paradine which would indicate they were obviously still married.

1853 was the year that Paradine was born rather than John which has been relatively well established by the Census to be 1847 (with the exception of the 1900 Census)

SO now the question becomes HOW to prove the lineage without the death certificate info. I have searched the net for an obituary for Lorenzo (which may indicate where John was at the time) or for any of Lorenzo's other children's obituaries hoping beyond hope to no avail

Anyway that's what I know so if anyone has a tree missing a branch I have the info - I just feel like a twig looking for a branch

Please contact me at chadduck@chadduck.com (oh and before someone says that Cindy Chadduck may be able to help - she's my wife.)

BJ Chadduck
