My GGGGrandfather, Nicholas Hartzell, was from Stoystown, Lower Turkeyfoot, Somerset Co., Pa. He was born 1791. In 1814 he went into an agreement with Peter Kimmel of Pittsburg, Pa. to go to Ste. Genevieve, Mo. and set up a tanyard for 18 months. I found several court documents where Peter Kimmel sued the estate. I cannot make out the name of the tanyard, looks like Shingler/Shingles/Skingler Tanyard. Silas was summoned to court at Ste. Genevieve several times and was later moved to Brownsville, Jackson County, Illinois 27th July 1822. While in Ste.Genevieve, Nicholas married Mary Goza. I cannot find them in any census records, marriage records, burial records. Nicholas died in 1822 in Ste. Genevieve and Mary remarried Samuel Staples as it mentions this in court documents. I cannot find out who Mary's parents were, but at the estate sale, the names Isaiah Goza, Michael Goza, Charles Goza purchased items. On another document, Hugh Goza's name was mentioned. Michael Goza was paid $22 for coffin money at grave. Mary and Nicholas had a son, Silas born in 1820.
After Mary married Samuel Staples, they moved to Washington Co., Mo. At the library in Ste. Gen., there were names listed in the index of surnames where the microfiche were, Amanda, Avaline, Charles, Elizah, Hugh, Michael, Issiah, Rhoda and William Goza. Michael was a Justice of the Peace. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
