My great grandfather, Samuel Ferris, and his family lived in or the vicinity of Alton, IL circa 1859-1862. He lived on Dardenne Island from 1867 (or before) to around 1870, then he moved to St. Charles, MO, where he lived until 1879 when he moved to KS. Presumably, he paid the federal government for allowing him to live on Dardenne Island to cut trees for wood to sell to steamboat captains plying the Missisippi River. My question: Where might I get written data regarding Samuel Ferris's arranging with the federal government for land usage on Dardenne Island? If there is any cost to provide me accurate information, I will reimburse that person incurrring the expense. Thank you for your response.
