Egbert Anson Van Alstyne (composer of "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree" and other well-known songs of the World War I era) attended Centenary schools and lived in Saverton township, south of Hannibal, in his youth. It is said that Van Alstyne attended school with my great grandfather, Harvey Martin Snell, and that his famous song was inspired by an apple tree growing on a hill in the area of Centenary between Centenary and the Mississippi River south of "Fools Creek". Centenary is in the Saverton Township area. About a mile 1 1/2 miles south of Saverton in Ralls County, Missouri.
