Steve:

I thought I might have found and answer to the family of your Louis Carpenter, but only a guess. I found the following in case you have not seen it before.

1870 Mo Putnam Co. Liberty image 12
82/82 Jno Carpenter 63 farmer b NY
S. 38 MO
A.?. male 17 IL
S.A. Fem 14 MO
Colum Male 12 "
L, Male 10
M Carpenter dau 2
Ella " " 1/12
H. R. " Male 20 IL Farm Hand
I reasoned the wife S was perhaps the stepmother, the L (Louis) and the two younger girls by the new wife.Seemed like a match to me, but then I went to the 1880

1880 Mo Putnam Co Liberty Dist 205 image 2
16/17 John Carpenter 73
Susan 47
Mary D. 11
Maggie C 9
Clorra B. 3
Columbus Kerby/Kirby 22 stepson
Lafayette " 20 ""
This looks like Colum and L would be these boys on the 1870. It still might be something to check into.
