A searchable index to Tennessee death certificates 1949-2005 is available at the Shelby County Register of Deed’s website (http://register.shelby.tn.us). I was unable to find a Fred Smith that matched your data.

If Frances is unable to find an obituary, you may want to try ordering a death certificate from Arkansas Vital Records. The cost is $10.00 by mail. Unfortunately, the Arkansas death indexes do not go past 1950.

FWIW, many of my ancestors lived around Steele in the early 1900’s. Several of them married and died in Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas.
