States: Missouri: Pemiscot
Caruthersville, as a town was incorporated in 1857. Before that, the riverfront settlement was known as Little Prarrie. This partially went into the Mississippi River during the series of earthquakes of 1812/1813. John Hardeman Walker was a big land owner during Missouri's transition to statehood. When the area now known as the bootheel was left out of Missouri, John H. complained bitterly to his friend, Rep. Samuel T. Caruthers. Hence the Bootheel was scooped out of Arkansas. You can guess from this how Caruthersville got it's name! John Hardeman Walker's grave site is just a few steps out of my son's house, and is still maintained as an historic site.
