I usually have the best luck regarding the origin of these places by keying in "History of" (ie, Newton County, Missouri) whatever place I am seeking more info on. If they have a website, you will find it. You will also find ones connected to government sources, tourism, etc., but almost inevitably I have gotten the information I wanted with this. One cannot do better than the GenWeb sites either. Just key in MOGenWeb.com and see what happens..
