Hi Kelly,
My family all came from there but we moved when I was just 3 1/2.My mother grew up in Kirkwood. Her parent's name was MacMillan.Harriet and Walker Macmillan. My grandmother's mother was a Cooper. We have an old sampler done by Harriet Joesphine Cooper from the 1830's.
At anyrate, My mother went by Rebecca Carter MacMillan and her brother was Thomas Lange MacMillan. He died and we went back to the Bellefontaine(sp) cemetary last year for that.As we went through Kirkwood, Mom showed us the old train station and told of stories from their childhood on how all the kids in the neighborhood would run down and help push the giant turntable that the train reversed direction on when it pulled in.
I will ask her the name of her street again. Her dad ran one of the bigger banks in town until the depression hit and he developed a brain tumor. They also referred to him as "Charlie".
Ever heard of any Skinners or Putnams? My dad taught at St. Louis Country Day school but we left in 1961 or 1962.
Mom said that some of today's celebrities grew up in that neighborhood. Was it Pat Robertson and another one who ran for president in the last election.Same guy is switching parties this time but may have my names mixed a bit, sorry.
Apologies for the chattiness.Hope something rings a bell, good talking with you.
Hannah
