Need information

I am trying to find out where to get information on children placed in an orphanage. I have no idea where to begin. The children I am trying to find information on are James, Henry and Sister Cobb. I have no other name for Sister. I do know that about James was born 12 Dec 1923. Henry abt 1925 and Sister abt 1927, possibly in Missouri. All three children had different fathers. Their mother was Sylvia Merry Myrtle Cobb, born 17 Feb 1907 in Lawrence, Missouri.

From the story passed down through the family, Sylvia left to go visit Sister's father. When she returned, she found out that her mother had turned all three children over to the state. James took to running away, refusing to be adopted. Henry was adopted by the Forrest family and his first name changed to James. Sister is said to have fallen and hit her head while still at the orphanage, which caused her death.

I am trying to find out where Missouri State orphanage records might be found. Mainly to try and find out if Sister actually died in the orphanage and what her real name might be.

Thanks in advance.
