Here's his Mo Archives service card, but unfortunately no age is listed:

There's no Joseph Whitaker listed in St. Clair County, but he may have been the one born 1834 Ohio listed in adjoining Hickory County censuses, who's listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedule as a "U.S. Soldier" but no unit or dates.
