You really have to think 'outside the box' with these brick wall ancestors. I have had a few of them in my family research.

Since Buchanan Co, MO seems to be the base location for this scattered Carter family.....I am betting that the Opal Carter 10, on the 1920 MO, Buchanan Co census (already sent to you) is your Opal. Which would mean she was taken in by the Middleton couple after the age of ten. Remember someone already sent you the 1920 census for the Middletons and Opal was not with them. Soooooooo, she was taken in by the Middletons around age 10 and by age 20 she listed as Opal Middleton and is living with her married sister Myrtle & bro in law, Lawrence on the 1930 MO, Buchanan Co census.

I would guess that Opal was 'taken in' by the Middleton family and adopted by the heart but at the age of 10+, I doubt she was adopted legally. She probably used the surname Middleton out of love and respect for the couple that took her in. This did (and still does) happen all the time. But if an adoption did happen the records might be in Buchanan County, MO. Since she was not an infant, they should not be sealed.

IF her surname was never legally changed......you can still prove that Opal Carter is the same Opal Middleton. You just have to be more creative.

Look for an OBIT for William Edward Carter. I sent you his dod & that Buchanan County web site I sent you should have good places to check.

From the 1900 census you know the mother was listed as Mandale...probably should have been spelled Manda Lee.

From the 1910 census you have the siblings of Opal Carter.

1920 census (sent to you) shows Stanton Carter living with his Uncle, Silas W. Breckenridge. Another strong lead that the mother of these Carter children was Amanda Lee Breckenridge.

From the 1930 census you have Opal Middleton, sister in law, (single..so not a married name) living with Myrtle. Here is your first big lead to connect these two. Someone already sent you Myrtle's two marriages and date of birth/death. Ordering the 'original' social security application for Myrtle should give you her parents names. If it is William Carter & Amanda Lee Breckenridge; BINGO you have a solid connection to your Opal.

Have you ordered a copy of the 'original' social security application for Opal?? She may have listed her birth parents on it instead of the Middletons....worth a try.

I sure would order a death record for that Stanton....I bet it is her brother. WOW....just found a listing that states this Stanton I sent you the info on is Opal's brother.

Thought I would check one more site before closing and looks like I found a family chart on them that someone has already done alot of work on. BUT.....as always, you will need to contact the submitter and ask about documentation he is willing to share OR send for your own documentation to the different states. But atleast it is a place to start from.

Go to:
Familysearch.org

Select:
Advance search

On right side: imput father: William Carter....Mother: Amanda Breckenridge.......NOTHING ELSE.

A page with numerous listing will come up. Go to the bottom of this page to PEDIGREE RESOURCE FILE....Click on each child's name. At the bottom of that page is the name & address of the submitter.

Very interesting is the info on this "TREE" for Amanda Lee Breckenridge!! According to this submitter she went on to marry again, Arthur J. Johnson....And Amanda bn 17 apr 1876; died 05 jun 1952 in Holton, Jackson Co, Kansas.

Alot of new info sent here. It will take you awhile to follow-up on it and organize it for your family charts.

Since the submitter has some exact dates & spouses names, he may be a descendant. How else would he have your Opal's name..dates...married surname and yet have her listed as a Carter??? Please remember to check out the data you find on any "TREE" for yourself. Either by contacting the submitter and inquiring about sources OR (and the best way) send for the documents yourself. But thanks to the hard work of this submitter....you have great starting point for this family. Together with the addtl info I have sent you....it should keep you busy for quite awhile.

Good luck and have fun,
Marsha
