I think you need to find the censuses for him first - a possibility, there's a 'Bennie' Thompson born about 1909 in the 1920 census of Eldorado Springs, with widowed mother Della and siblings.

In 1910 this family appears to be in Franklin Co, KS. Children are:
Hattie C. Thompson, 1898
Murie A, 1901
Ida M, 1907
and William B, 1909.
(I can't access the full record here - hopefully someone else will find it for you).

Father of this family is William H. Thompson. You can find his death certificate in 1917 here:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#search

It gives his DOB as Mar 18 1860. His father is Henry Thompson, b. Kansas, his mother unknown.
