Thank you for prompt response. do you have any ideas why in 1870 census the family is "white" and then in 1880 census marked as "black" ? Not even marked as "mulatto"!! Was it possibly an American Indian/ Black ...and the "Trail of tears' or something made it worse>>>???

Family lore is that Walter and family members left Tennessee to go to Calif. Stopped at the World's Fair and Walter stayed, married and started a family. I have my suspicions, but family descendents in St. Louis may not have a clue.
