I did a lookup for you on Missouri units and the Marr surname:
Gen. Sterling Price
http://www.missouridivision-scv.org/camp145.htmhttp://www.missouridivision-scv.org/camp145.htm
He governed over Missouri units.
So if your John served under him, then it was in a Missouri unit.

I did not find any records pertaining to a John W or J W Mar/Marr serving in any MO unit.It could be his surname was screwed up on records or transcriptions, or he is showing above with the wrong initial.I tried to locate persons who served from Clay County, but wasn't able to come up with any info in that regard. He also may have joined up in a unit from a neighboring county, something you may want to check out as well.
I tried!
