I can only offer a couple of clues. When I searched for Happle James on Ancestry.com I found your father listed in the 1930 census in San Fernando, CA as a pupil in a school, appears to be a small military academy? He is also listed in the CA death index:
Happle Bradford James
b. 22 Jun 1916
d. 7 Dec 1982
born MO
mother's maiden name: Brown

There was also a listing for a Happle B. James in the AR death index. This Happle died 15 Jun 1928 in Pulaski county. I cannot find him in any census so I don't know if he lived there or just died there or how old he was. Maybe an obituary would help.

Have you looked for your father's birth record in St. Louis?
