Thank You!Mary is listed as Mary E. in th 1870 (I think) census - Pulaski Co., IL.In 1900 Mary Powers Gatton was Mary Stull (second marriage) living possibly with her daughter Sallie Hayden in America Precinct, Pulaski, Co., IL, Villa Ridge, IL.That is where she appears in 1910 census.
Since I have never been able, and now you didn't either, in Mo, AR ----I want to believe they were not there in 1850 and 1860.The handed down old family story - told very vividly by Mary's eldest grandson - is of how she and her two or three brothers traveled from Greenville, MO. At some point they had gotten on a boat going up the Ohio river. The brothers left the boat (Ohio river) at Cairo and were paid to join Civil War efforts.Mary had remained on the boat, and got off at the county seat of Pulaski Co., IL - Caledonia. She got a job of housekeeper for the jailer, Mr. Gatton who was a widower with three young sons.Soon they were married (recorded in Pulaski Co., IL). Good story --- and I found the name of her parents - James Powers and Rebecca Bean on her marriage return in 1894 when she married Mr. Stull. Thanks again.Martha
