Theresa, I had an old buddie 40 years ago, his people came from the Ste.Genevieve County area of Mo.,where many French-Canadians came in late 1700's to early 1800's. His family name was DePugh, but some changed it for whatever reason along the way to "Pugh". There were French and French-Canadians all thru early America, many places, including early Huguenots. Many "anglisized'their names to fit in. During the time the Scots and Irish were prejdiced against many dropped the 'Mac', or 'Mc', or 'O', to fit in. Your 'Pughs' could very easily be 'DePughs', or 'McPughs', or 'O'Pughs'. You need to check all variant spellings for it. The 1800's were a time of many name changes to fit in to American life, Al
