Charles,
The whole area of Jasper County was lead mines.Today, the town of Joplin, MO. has the fairly common experience of waking to find fron yards, lots, even building missing, because of "sink holes".The whole area is undermined by miles and miles of mine shafts. The Connor Hotel on Main Street sinks by inches a year.
There were many, many lead mines in Jasper county. My greatgrandfather owned one called the Mitchell Mine.I was born not long before the mines all closed, but those things managed to claim the males of a whole generation of my family by cave-ins and Black Lung.
The largest mine was the one owned by Eagle Picher, which is still there.Their smelter was in North Joplin in the area still known as Smelter Hill.Hope this helps.
