David Nesmith/Nessmith & Susan Cave
My name is Lynne D (Gilley) NesSmith, and I am President of the NesSmith Association.
I am looking for a David Nesmith/Nessmith. Born in 1830, the census say that he was born ether in Virginia, or Tenn. I hope you can help me, please. I have been looking for this man for sometime now. Here is a short story about him.
David Nesmith was born in Virginia, or Tenn, in 1830, (His son David told the 1900, census that he was born in Tenn., but all the other census that I have found say that he was born in Virginia.) Between 1830, to 1860, he moved a round a lot. He might have gone to Tenn., AL., may be GA. (I have read a book about the Stones, that David came from GA., and was part Indian, and in that book, It has him as Frank, and his wife has Sarah Smith.)
David Nessmith/Nesmith was a plantation over seer in Alabama has I have been told. When the Civil War started, he did not what to be in the war, so he took his family, and first moved to Galena, Kansas, where he work in the mines.
David and Barbara have 4 maybe 6 children, Jim, John, Francis, (I found Francis, and his family in California, Francis married an Ethel King, and had 2 daugthers,) and Florence, (nothing on her.) (There could be another son name Jesse Nessmith, that I have found along with his brother John Nessmith. I have also found a Mary Nasmith who's the daughter of a David Nasmith from West Virginia, on August 7, 1852, but I have not been able to link her, John or Jesse to this family yet.)
Wife Barbara Kaiser (no other information) was with him in 1861, when there son Francis "Frank" Marion Nessmith was born, I am not sure to were he was born, but his death cert. said that he was born in Missouri. (It is also said that Frank ran around with James, and Dulton gane.)
In 1862, when there daughter Florence was born he was in Kansas.
Sometime between 1862, and 1867, he married Susan Cave, (I have no information on her line).
In 1867, when his daughter Lillie was born in February 1867. (She married George Lowery, about 1892, and had 2 Sons, and after George and Sarah died, she married Thomas Stone, about 1896, and had 1 daughter.) And in 1869, when their daughter Sarah Josephine was born, they were in Missouri. (Sarah married Thomas Stone, August 1, 1889, in Skullyville, Oklahoma, and had 2 children.)
In 1870, he was in Ralls Co., Missouri, when the census was taking.
In 1872, he was in Missouri, when his daughter, Virginia Bright Nessmith was born on May 5, 1872. (She married Edward Steven Stout, in 1889, and in 1890, they had a daughter, the only child they had, in Bokoshe, Oklahoma.)
In 1876, he was in Sedalia, Pettis Co., Missouri, on February 15, 1876, when his son David Nessmith was born. (He married Mary Virginia Page, (she was part Choctaw Indian,) on August 23, 1897, in Buck Creek Court house, Skullyville Co., Oklahoma, and had 7 children. Mary already had a daughter, named Lillith Grayton, when they married. Mary died in 1927, and after that, David remarried a woman named Ollie Pressley, who had been married once before to a man name Jenkins.)
He was in Arkansas about 1881, and 1884, when his daughters Annie Alabama, and Dora were born. (Annie married Ottis McLemore, and had 2 children.)
And the other daughter Dore, (married Albert Stone, on December 24, 1900, in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma Territory, the other stone brother. They had 2 children.)
In 1887, when his wife Susan died, they were in the upper Northwest corner of Arkansas.
He meet a woman named Alice Howell, (no other information,) and they had two sons.
One name Charles, (it has been told that he was in WWI, and some how or another hurt his foot. It is also said that he died during 1920's in T.B. Sanitarium at Talihinia, Oklahoma, Not sure where Charles was born. And the other son named George, he was born in Missouri about 1892. (This information is from the 1920, LaFlore Co., Oklahoma Census.)
He was back in Galena, Kansas about 1897, or 1899, when he was with the Stone family on the wagon train from Galena, Kansas. On he way to see his son David in Pacola, LaFlore Co., Oklahoma, David Nesmith/Nessmith died in Gore, Sequoyah Co., Oklahoma about 1900.
Three of David and Susan daughter's married 2 Stone brothers. Two of them married the same Brother. All of the girls that married the stone brother died in there 20's or 30's.
Thank you very much
