JEFFERSON D. (JEFF or J.D.) EDGE Murder & Family Info

JEFFERSON D. (JEFF or J.D.) EDGE was a prominant attorney in McDonald Co, MO living at
different times in South West City and Pineville during the 1890's. He and his family moved to
McDonald Co, MO from Smithville, DeKalb Co, TN between Oct 1889 and March 1892.

Jeff was murdered by SCOTT YEARGAIN, sometime between Oct 1898 and probably June
1899, as the trial was held in Aug 1899. We know that he was killed in McDonald County (but don't know in what city) since the trial was held in Pineville.

My great-grandfather, who lived with Jeff and his family just prior to his murder told the story that,
while in a saloon, Jeff was shot in the back by Scott Yeargain. We spent two days
in Pineville at the courthouse and library going through newspaper microfilm and court documents.
There is no mention of the actual murder and almost no references to the trial in the South West City and
Pineville newspapers. This seems odd since Edge was a respected attorney and the Yeargains were
a prominent family in the county. (We later found out that both newspapers were owned by the Yeargain family.) We can't even find where JEFF EDGE was buried. His mother and two daughters, all who preceeded him in death, are buried at the city cemetery in South West City. We assume he is buried there in an unmarked grave.
His wife, NANCY EDNA CRIPPS EDGE, and their children are listed on the 1900 and 1910
Censuses in Pineville.

According to their obituaries, NANCY EDNA CRIPPS EDGE and daughter PHEBE EDGE
are buried in the Pineville Cemetery, but are not listed on the index at the Pineville Library.

The JEFF EDGE family is as follows:

8. EDNA L. EDGE

Only four children lived into adulthood. I can't find any info on any of them.

This whole family has been a mystery. I would love to hear from anyone that has heard
about this murder and trial or has any knowledge of this family.

Thanks,
Ann Marie Boatright Ryals
