States: Missouri: Maries
Hi Shanna, I was so glad to see your posting. I live in Maries County, and also have a deep interest in the Gold Rush Era in California. My great-great-great grandmother, Sarah Kelly, lived in El Dorado for the years 1850-early 1854. At that time she left her husband, Nicholas Kelly, and brought her two small children and a grown step-son from Calfornia to New York Harbor, and then all the way across to Maries County MO. Nicholas and Sarah were not from this area - they left Illinois to travel West - but I have found some folks in the 1850 census who I believe did hail from this area and then returned to it. Sarah came here for a reason - she wouldn't have traveled halfway across the continent with those children without knowing someone here. I am sure she met up with folks from this area out there. Do you know if your ancestors remained in California, or if any of them returned to Maries County? We have a book, King's History of Maries County, and in it he mentions about certain ones going overland to the Gold Rush. His book is a great place to start - but he wrote it many years after the fact, and it isn't always complete - but I cannot research without it. I am going to look up the Hughes family and see what he has to say about them. Please feel free to email me at:
