I am looking for information about Lewis M BEST, Jr who was born about 1849, probably in Chillicothe Twp, Livingston Co.
His father, Lewis M Best Sr, was a farmer, slave dealer, and a notorious supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Lewis Jr. grew up on the family farm that was about 5 miles from Chillicothe. Abt 1869-1870, he married Samantha Jane SUTER. In 1880, the census record shows them in Rich Hill Twp, Livingston Co.
I have been unable to find Lewis in census records after 1880 and am wondering if he died or if he and Samantha separated.
I have not located Samantha in the 1900 census either. But from 1910 - 1930, she was living in El Paso Co, CO, with no sign of Lewis. She does not list herself as widowed until 1930.
I have found information on only one of their children - Thomas Ulysses BEST, who was born in 1871, married Edith LEABO, and moved to Oklahoma where he died in 1962.
The other Best children were:
Blanche b: abt 1874
Lambert b: abt 1877
Fred, b: 1880
At least two of these children had died before 1910.
I would appreciate receiving information or clues about this family.
I have only other clue to this family. In 1950, the CHILLICOTHE CONSTIUTION TRIBUNE published some historical articles about the Civil War period. In March, 1950, there was an article that described some of the brutalities associated with Lewis Best Sr. (16 March 1950). On 21 March, Lewis Best Sr's great-granddaughter, Edith Davis COX, published a letter to the editor protesting the embarrassment caused by the newspaper in resurrecting material about Lewis Best Sr.
From this letter, I deduce that at least one of Lewis Best Jr's children remained in Livingston Co, probably a daughter who married a Davis and was the mother of the Edith Davis Cox mentioned above.
Thanks for your assistance.
