I was a the library in Mount Vernon (the County seat for lawrence County), MO the other day, searching for information about my ggg-grandfather, Benjamin Hunt, who was living in the Pierce City area in 1870.
While at the library, I did not find anything on my Benjamin, but I did see many other Hunt family members. I am not sure yet how my Ben is connected to them, but am certain he must be.
My Ben was born in England, moved to the US/Ohio at the age of 6. He lived in Lawrence County (Mount Pleasant, which no longer exists, but is near what is now Pierce City) for less than 10 years, for the 1880 Census shows him living 100 miles away.
I find it hard to believe that Ben would move to SW Missouri as a "farmer", unless there was other family there for him. This part of the country was very woody and brushy back then (still is in a lot of parts), and most of it is not known for it's fertile land-- we have a few inches of dirt on top of solid ROCK.
Have any of you Hunt decendants ever ran across a Benjamin Hunt that fits this description?
The Hunt family that I did find, are quite interesting!
