I'm not related but did some looking. Maxim was born abt 1822 in Michigan, and was a dry goods merchant. I believe he was in St. Louis in 1860 and was back in St. Louis before 1878, when he married Mrs. Harriet Hastings. Maxim died in St Louis in 1895 & Harriet died in St. Louis in 1901.

Jane Pearl was b. about 1823 in New York. I can find no trace of her in MO in 1860. She's in the 1870 census with Maxim in Lebanon, and apparently died before 1878. I haven't been able to find her in any of the Laclede Co.Cemetery Books yet and don't find any Pearls in the area either. In my opinion, she probably doesn't tie to your Purl family.
