Hi, Maranda. Thank you so much for your time and attention to my post. I will quote parts of your post with my answers to the questions you raised.
Yours: “That means getting birthdates, marriage dates, death dates, etc. for every individual who took part in the horse drive.” [i.e. Markham, Watson, Huff]
The Markhams and the Watsons are chronologically tracked via census and marriage records back to late 1700s and 1800s in VA/WVA/KY up to their sojourn in Warrensburg, Johnson Co MO which was after the 1880 census up until probably spring of 1897, and then are tracked from the 1900 census in ND to present day, including death records. It is which Huff family that I am trying to place in same time/place as the others for ca 1885 to 1897 in MO, as the John is the only given name we have and is not found on the 1880 or prior with any certainty. The mentioned John Huff was also in same area of ND in 1900, all having land records early 1900s in Morton Co ND, said John later donating his for town of Huff there. Therefore, my hope for any other Huff given names mentioned in Johnson Co MO either in city directory or news articles mid 1890s.

Thanks for above online sites which I didn’t have specifically, and will try JSHS for lookup re directories and newspapers; the rest given I have about exhausted, though I have not yet tried the Huff Genforum and will do so. As for google search for a John Huff, afraid it would be equivalent of a John Smith! I have a list of the John Huffs on 1880 MO but none panned out and think ours elsewhere that year. The stock raisers association connection is a great idea and will try both MO and ND for local associations. It is my grandfather’s mother’s Huff family I am trying to pinpoint; she sister to this John who were both born ca 1860s, she died young and unmarried; and Grandfather’s father was the John W. Markham. John Huff never married so no records there, no DC for him yet. Your help with my query is greatly appreciated. Any other links you find that might be helpful would also be appreciated.
Patricia
